Overview

Cusco & Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Cusco’s main square was once the center of the Inca Empire, where the four roads of the empire converged. At the height of the Inca civilization, the empire extended from modern-day Ecuador and parts of Colombia, through all of present-day Peru and Bolivia, down to northern Chile and Argentina.

Ruins, temples, churches, mansions, and a variety of architectural styles make Cusco a showcase of Peru’s diverse cultures and historical periods: Pre-Inca, Inca, Colonial, and Republican. Cusco is therefore a memorable destination, full of history and culture, with a splendid legacy. It is also the departure point for visiting the impressive Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu.

Tour Plan

We will pick you up at your hotel at 5:00 a.m., then travel 82 km from the railroad to the starting point at Piskacucho (2,700 m / 8,858 ft). Here, we begin our trek, which takes approximately 10 hours to reach our first campsite at Llulluchapampa (3,800 m / 12,467 ft).

The trek follows the Vilcanota (Willkamayu) River and continues along the Kusichaca River, passing important sites such as Miskay, Llactapata, Inka Wasi, Willkaraqay, and the Huayllabamba community. The path becomes more demanding as we ascend, but the panoramic landscapes reward every step. We pass through dense forests and locations including Tres Piedras (3,300 m / 10,827 ft) before arriving at Llulluchapampa. Our porters will have the campsite ready for dinner and overnight stay.

Meals: Snack, Lunch, Dinner

This day covers the most challenging and spectacular section of the trek. We cross the highest point of the Inca Trail, Warmiwañuska (Dead Woman’s Pass, 4,200 m / 13,780 ft). The trek takes an average of 12 hours.

After breakfast, we ascend to the highest point and then begin a steep descent toward Pacaymayo Valley (3,600 m / 11,811 ft). The second high point is Runkuraqay (3,900 m / 12,795 ft), with views of the snow-capped mountains Verónica and Pumasillo.

During the day, we explore important archaeological sites: Runkuraqay, Sayacmarca, Qonchamarca, Chaquiqocha, Phuyupatamarca, and Intipata. The trail passes through diverse ecosystems, including the famous Inca tunnel, and descends via Inca steps to the Wiñaywayna Archaeological Complex (2,700 m / 8,858 ft), where we camp for the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Dinner

This is the most anticipated day of the trek. We wake early to follow the original Inca Trail to Intipunku (Sun Gate), where we are rewarded with our first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu.

After descending to Machu Picchu, we enjoy a 2.5-hour guided tour covering major structures and monuments, including:

  • Main Plaza
  • Temple of the Three Windows
  • Intihuatana (Solar Clock)
  • Royal Quarters
  • Temple of the Condor
  • Cemeteries and enclosures
  • Sacred springs
  • Urban and agricultural sectors

After the guided tour, you will have free time for photography or optional activities, including Huayna Picchu hike or descending to Aguas Calientes to enjoy the thermal baths. In the evening, the train returns to Cusco.
